How to Get Your Drivers License
1. Drivers Education
This course consists of 30 hours of classroom training to help you learn the fundamentals of road rules and safety.
2. Learners Permit
After successfully completing your drivers education course, you'll need to take a learner's permit test at your local DMV office. Before you go, consider taking a couple online practice tests, and be sure to bring all of the following documents with you:
- Completed form DL 44 (originals only; complete with both parents' signatures); Call the DMV to receive this application by mail
- Proof of your true full name
- Social security number
- An acceptable document proving birthday and legal presence (ie. birth certificate)
- Proof of drivers ed completion
- Application fee - $31
Your permit is not valid until you begin drivers training.
3. Drivers Training
Once you've successfully passed your permit test, here's what you'll need to do in order to be eligible for your driving test:
- Practice at least 50 hours of driving (10 of which must be at night)
- Complete your 6 hours of driver training
- Hold your permit for 6 months from the date it was issued to you
- Be at least 16 years old
4. Drivers License
Now you're ready to take your driving test to receive your license. To schedule your test, call the DMV at (800) 777-0133, or schedule online.
Drivers License Restrictions
First Six Months
Daytime: 5am - midnight- Cannot transport passengers under the age of 20, unless accompanied by a licensed driver 25 years or older
- Can drive alone
- Cannot drive between 11pm - 5am
First Six Months
Nighttime: midnight - 5am- Cannot drive unless accompanied by a licensed driver 20 years or older
- Cannot drive between 11pm - 5am
Second Six Months
Daytime: 5am - midnight- Can transport passengers of any age
- Can drive alone
Second Six Months
Nighttime: midnight - 5am- Cannot drive unless accompanied by a licensed driver 25 years or older
